Introduction

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is one of the most important tools in Earth observation, capturing data from two satellites — Terra and Aqua — since 1999. With its ability to monitor various environmental parameters, MODIS data has become invaluable for researchers, policymakers, and resource managers. This article explores the diverse applications of MODIS data, its key features, and its impact on environmental monitoring.

Designed with a predicted life of six years, Terra (left) and Aqua (right) have continued to perform beyond expectations. However, recent maneuvers by NASA in February 2020 and March 2021 have revealed that these aging satellites will be retired in the coming years. Credit: NASA
